Fire Hydrant Inspection Software Guide - Coming Soon

This guide explains what hydrant inspection and flow-testing software needs to record. FireInspected currently supports NFPA 10 portable fire extinguisher workflows; hydrant support is planned.

What a fire hydrant workflow needs

Fire hydrant programs typically record condition, location, flow-test measurements, deficiencies, maintenance, and reports under the applicable requirements. FireInspected does not currently provide a hydrant workflow.

Visual exterior inspection

• Barrel and bonnet condition - Check for cracks, rust, paint condition, and physical damage from vehicles or weather
• Operating nut and stem condition - Verify the operating nut is not rounded, rusted, or damaged and turns freely
• Outlet caps and gaskets - Check all caps are present, gaskets are in good condition, and threads are not damaged
• Visibility and access - Confirm the hydrant is visible and accessible - not blocked by landscaping, snow, or parked vehicles
• Drainage - Verify the hydrant drains properly after use to prevent freezing in cold climates

Flow testing data capture

• Static pressure reading - Record baseline pressure in the water main before flow begins
• Residual pressure reading - Measure pressure while water is flowing to assess main capacity
• Pitot tube flow measurement - Calculate flow rate (GPM) using pitot gauge readings and hydrant outlet coefficients
• GPS location tagging - Automatically tag each hydrant with GPS coordinates for mapping and routing
• Test date and technician record - All data timestamped and attributed for compliance documentation

Maintenance scheduling and deficiency tracking

• Lubrication schedule - Track when each hydrant was last lubricated and when it's next due
• Paint and marking schedule - Color-coded bonnet and caps per NFPA 291 for flow classification
• Deficiency flagging - Flag hydrants needing repair, out of service, or inoperable with deficiency notes
• Work order generation - Generate repair work orders directly from inspection notes
• Automated annual reminders - A hydrant platform should remind the team when each unit is due for its next inspection
