NFPA 10 Fire Extinguisher Inspection Guide

What is NFPA 10?

NFPA 10 is the Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers published by the National Fire Protection Association. It establishes the requirements for selection, installation, inspection, maintenance, recharging, and testing of portable fire extinguishers. Essentially, it's the rulebook every fire protection contractor follows.

The current edition is NFPA 10 (2022). States and local jurisdictions may adopt different editions, so always verify with your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

NFPA 10 Inspection Types

NFPA 10 defines three levels of extinguisher inspection:

1. Monthly Visual Inspection

Required every 30 days. Can be performed by the building owner or designated employee - no certification required. The inspector checks:

• Extinguisher is in its designated location
• Access and visibility are unobstructed
• Pressure gauge reads in the operable range
• Safety seals and tamper indicators are intact
• No obvious physical damage, corrosion, or leakage
• Operating instructions are legible and face outward

2. Annual Maintenance Inspection

Required every 12 months. Must be performed by a certified fire extinguisher technician. Includes all monthly checks plus:

• Internal examination of the extinguisher
• Verification of hydrostatic test date
• Weight verification
• Check that extinguisher type matches the hazard in the area
• Inspection of mounting bracket and signage
• Complete documentation on the inspection tag

3. Internal Maintenance (6-Year and 12-Year)

Every 6 years, stored-pressure extinguishers require internal examination. Every 12 years, they require hydrostatic testing. These must be performed by certified facilities with the proper equipment.

Fire extinguisher types covered by NFPA 10

NFPA 10 covers all classes of portable fire extinguishers:

• Class A: Ordinary combustibles (wood, paper, cloth)
• Class B: Flammable liquids (gasoline, oil, grease)
• Class C: Energized electrical equipment
• Class D: Combustible metals
• Class K: Cooking oils and fats (kitchen fires)
