Fire Extinguisher Types and Classes: A–B–C–D–K Guide

What each fire extinguisher class means
Class A: ordinary combustibles
Class A fires involve materials that commonly leave ash when they burn, including paper, cardboard, wood, cloth, and many ordinary plastics. Class A ratings are common in commercial buildings because these materials appear in offices, storage areas, corridors, and tenant spaces.
During an inspection, record the extinguisher’s class rating from the nameplate rather than assuming that every red cylinder is an ABC unit. The equipment record should also identify the exact location and whether access, mounting, signage, and the inspection tag are in good condition.
Class B: flammable liquids and gases
Class B fires involve flammable liquids and gases, such as fuels, solvents, and some industrial chemicals. These fires call for an extinguisher agent labeled for the hazard. Water is not a universal answer for a flammable-liquid fire and can spread some burning liquids.
For contractors, the useful inspection question is not just “does this extinguisher say B?” It is “does this labeled extinguisher match the hazard documented at this location, and is the unit serviceable?” Capture both the rating and the hazard context in the report.
Class C: energized electrical equipment
Class C identifies a fire involving energized electrical equipment. The agent must be nonconductive for the intended use. Once electrical equipment is de-energized, the remaining fuel determines the relevant fire class, so the class letter is about the condition of the equipment at the time of the fire.
Do not confuse Class C with an extinguisher agent. CO2 is one example of an agent used on some electrical hazards, but the label on the individual extinguisher determines its actual rating and limitations.
Class D: combustible metals
Class D fires involve combustible metals. The correct extinguishing medium depends on the metal and the process, so Class D equipment is specialized rather than interchangeable. A metalworking facility may need different coverage from a laboratory or a plant handling metal powders.
Inspectors should record the exact agent or model, the protected process, and any visible deficiency. Do not recommend a generic ABC replacement for a Class D hazard without a qualified review.
Class K: commercial cooking oils and fats
Class K covers cooking oils and fats associated with commercial cooking appliances. Class K extinguishers are typically wet chemical units designed for that kitchen environment. A kitchen may also need other classes for ordinary combustibles or electrical equipment, but those do not replace the Class K requirement where the hazard calls for it.
What does ABC mean on an extinguisher?
ABC is a combination rating. It means the particular extinguisher is labeled for Class A, Class B, and Class C fires. It does not mean the extinguisher is suitable for Class D metals, Class K cooking oils, or every location where a fire could occur.
When an ABC extinguisher appears in an inspection record, capture the full rating and the agent type. Two extinguishers can share the ABC rating while differing in size, manufacturer, model, pressure, and service history. Those details matter for asset identity and maintenance.
What contractors should record for each extinguisher
- Asset identity: serial number, barcode or internal asset ID, make, model, size, and agent.
- Class rating: transcribe the letters and rating numbers from the nameplate; do not infer them from the agent alone.
- Location and hazard: building, floor, room, mounting point, and the hazard the extinguisher is intended to cover.
- Service condition: accessibility, gauge or pressure indicator, pin and seal, hose or nozzle, corrosion or damage, label legibility, mounting, and signage.
- Dates: inspection date, prior service date, manufacture date, and any applicable maintenance or hydrostatic-test dates.
- Action: pass, deficiency, removal from service, repair, recharge, replacement recommendation, or follow-up required.
